Bishop Malone’s Listening Session Draws 80 People

Buffalo Bishop Richard Malone’s “listening session” came to Olean Saturday morning.
He heard from sexual abuse victims and others at the special meeting at Archbishop Walsh Academy.
About 80 people came out to talk about clergy sexual abuse crisis.
It lasted for two hours. It’s the fourth of seven listening sessions.
Malone will hold three more in Batavia, Orchard Park and Dunkirk, in August.

An underage alcohol sting caught four people over the weekend at a check of 11 establishments.
They were charged with selling liquor to underage kids.
The stores involved inclued the Crosby’s in Delevan, The King’s Inn in Machias, Shelly’s Roadside Bar and Grill in Delevan,
and Finnerty’s Tap Room in Ellicotville.

Olean Police reportedly found methamphetamine and heroin in a home and a vehicle on South SEcond stret.
They arrested 49 year old Dwayne Motley. He’s being held for arraignment

Olean Farmers Market Officially Named

The Olean Planning Board has set a hearing next month on the $10 million 48-unit housing development in the former Market Basket warehouse.
CDS officials plan to redevelop the former warehouse as an apartment building for low-income and people wth disabilities.
The public hearing is set for Jully 22nd

The $1.25 million farmers market building now has an official name… Lincoln Square
The Common Council approved the official name .
The project is on schedule and the main construction is expected to wrap up by the end of the month.
Ribbon-cutting should be in mid-July.

Preliminary work got underway this week for repairs to the Forman Street bridge in Bradford . Crews are working to construct a temporary access road into the Holiday Inn. Once the access road is complete, the bridge will be closed for repairs and an official detour will be in place.

Olean Water and Sewer Rates Fixed in City Records

Water and sewer rates in Olean went up 100-times per gallon more Tuesday, but bills will still stay the same.

The Olean Common Council unanimously passed a resolution to change the wording in the last four water and sewer rate resolutions to change a clerical error from “cents” to “dollars.”

Primary voter turnout varied across Western New York. Turnout for democratic and republican primaries in Erie County ranged from 10 to 25 percent in some areas, 10 to 20 in Chautauqua County, 17.5 in Cattaraugus County and 19 in Allegany County.

The twenty-two-year-old Genesee man accused of shooting a 91-year-old relative last year will be sentenced next month.
John T. Polen IV, entered an Alford plea earlier this month to attempted murder in the first degree after he was accused of firing a shot at Turner Polen last year wounding him in the right shoulder blade and right cheek.

Buffalo Bishop Coming to Olean to Listen

Buffalo Bishop Richard Malone will be in Olean this weekend to listen to parishioners’ about clergy sexual abuse.
It’s being called a “listening session” because he won’t be answering questiongs.
It’s from 9:30 to 11:30 Saturday morning in the cafeteria at Archbishop Walsh Academy.
It will be the fourth of seven listening sessions held throughout Western New York over the next two months.
Members of the media will not be alowed in. The cafeteria holds about 200 people.

Olean is getting ready for a mosquito fight
They’ll be spraying a thirteen areas around the city.
The sites, range across the city but the majority are on city parklands or other areas where water will accumulate.
They range in size from the small retaining pond near the wastewater treatment plant up to Forness Park and the wooded areas along the Allegheny River Valley Trail and Gargoyle Park. Some are located on private property,

State and Local Primary Elections Today

State and Local Primary Elections Are happening today.
Polls will be open from noon to 9 p.m.
On the ballot in the Greater Olean area is the primary for State Senator in the 57th District.
it’s to fill a one-year vacancy created by the resignation of Catharine Young.
George Borrello and Curt Crandall are vying for the Republican nomination. Democrat Austin Morgan went unchallenged during the petition process and will face the winner of the Republican primary in the Nov. 5 election.

In addition, Republican primaries for county legislator will be held in Districts 1, 7 and 8. Other GOP primaries will take place in City of Olean Wards 2 and 6.
City of Olean voters will choose three candidates from the four individuals on the ballot for County District 8 legislators: Kelly J. Andreano, Brian J. George, Frank H. Higgins and Richard C. Smith.

Police Say Tops Friendly Markets Thief Arrested

The Dansville man accused of robbing Olean Tops Friendly Markets of more than $2,000 is back in Olean.
26 year old Kadeem Weldon is in jail and may have a preliminary hearing this week.
Weldon was arrested Friday by New York state parole officers who took him into custody Friday in the Dansville-Hornell area.
Weldon lived in Olean for a short time about four years ago.
He’s accused of robbing the store a couple of weeks ago by giving the service desk worker a note demanding money.

The SPCA of Cattaraugus County building is open with a new look after renovations.
Phase 1 of the improvements is complete. Phase 2 will involve renovating the medical area and the cat rooms. Once these renovations are done, and the HVAC system completed for better heat, air conditioning and fresher air, then a new initiative to completely renovate the dog kennels will begin.

Flash Flooding Hits Salamanca

Flash flooding closed several Salamanca streets Thursday, but there were no reports of injuries.
The Allegheny River at the Main Street bridge hit 7.36 feet Thursday and that was nearly 3 feet higher than Wednesday night.
The National Weather Service issued a hazardous outlook warning and a flood warning remained in effect until 1:30 in the afternoon.
Several Salamanca streets had to be temporarily closed, including parts of Wildwood, Prospect, State Park, West and Sycamore avenues and Elm, Eagle, Academy and Adams streets.

The Olean City School District may have to evaluate Archbishop Walsh Academy and Southern Tier Catholic School.
The state Education Department issued a mandate requiring school districts evaluate all independent and religious schools by the end of 2021. A Supreme Court judge struck down the mandate but the state Education Department says it plans to push the new substantial equivalency guidelines through the process early next month.

Cattaraugus County Schools Switch to Restorative Justice

Cattaraugus County schools are disciplining their students with what’s called ‘restorative justice’ instead of the traditional punishments that most people grew up with.

Restorative justice has the student agree on some kind of resolution, as opposed to detention, suspension or expulsion from school.

Restorative justice is becoming commonplace in schools all across the country.

The Hinsdale Central School District says it hopes to implement more restorative justice practices next school year.

Officials in Bradford say work on Main Street is going smoothly considering the wet weather.

They’re working on Main Street, from Festival Way to Mechanic Street. There’s still a lot of work left to be done with the lighting and traffic lights and putting in new trees.

Officials estimates the work will be completed by the end of October.

Olean Water Main Break

city crews worked to repair the West State water main break .
they had to deal with a broken 8-inch water main along the 2100 block of West State Street Monday.
The break caused a major loss of water and damaged the street. The water line was over 90 years old, so age was the apparent cause of failure.
Water was shut off to homes and businesses along the road as the repairs continued. ——————————————————————–
The Renovated Pioneer Oil Museum in Bolivar is ready to welcome visitors during Pioneer Oil Days
Pioneer Oil Days runs June 23-30.
The improvements include new paint on the walls and display shelves, all new lights and spotlights for displays and touched-up photos with new laminated and framed captions.

Cattaraugus County Readies for Early Voting

Cattaraugus County election commissioners are getting ready for all the early voting later this year.
There are two places for early voting in Cattaraugus County. One is at Jamestown Community College’s Olean campus and the other is in Little Valley at the county Board of Elections site. Democratic Election Commissioner Kevin Burleson and Republican Commissioner Cortney Spittler say that two early voting sites were needed to keep travel times to a maxium of around 30 minutes.

The first StrOlean of the year had a cool reception Saturday.
There were hundreds of visitors to downtown Olean for the event, but the weather was less than summer like.
The Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce held its first ever StrOlean in August of 2017.
The next StrOlean event will take place in conjunction with the Gus Macker basketball tournament Aug. 17 and the third event of the year will be held Oct. 26.
