Harvard Could Help Area Schools

Harvard University is helping rural New York schools to fight chronic absenteeism, and help with college readiness and college enrollment. Harvard’s new National Center for Rural Education Research Networks wants to work with 30 rural school districts in New York and 30 in Ohio. The districts would identify, pilot and test solutions before eventually sharing them amongst a network of other rural districts. School officials have until Friday to apply.
At least one local district, the Hinsdale Central School District, has applied.
A state Supreme Court judge says nearly 80 candidates authorized to run on the Cattaraugus County Independence Party line can’t do it. That includes Donna Vickman, a Republican who was running for a one-year vacancy on the Farmersville Town Board with Conservative and Independence authorization.
Judicial candidates are not affected by Supreme Court Judge Dennis E. Ward’s ruling.
The judge’s verdicts could be overturned by the Appellate Division Fourth Department in Rochester.
