State Money to Help Downtown Cuba Renovations

Three buildings in downtown Cuba will be renovated with almost a half a million dollars in state grant money.
The Kopper Keg on E. Main St. will be able to expand and rthe upper floor apartments will be renovated.
The Empire, and Story blocks will also be renovated.
An Ex-Olean alderman who was questioned about a couple of fires last year says he was the target of those two suspicious Christmas fires. The garage at Andrew Searles’ home on Greene Street was a total loss and the vacant home that Searles owns just down the block was damaged Tuesday by fire.
Searles told the Olean Times Herald he feels the fires were targeted attacks against him. He and his girlfriend’s cars were vandalized with spray paint that same morning. He also said his home surveillance video captured a suspect damaging the cars and walking around his home.

Police Rule Olean Fires Suspicious

Police are saying those two Christmas morning fires in Olean are suspicious and may be related
A house and garage fires were just a block apart on Greene street, and owned by same people
Police are interviewing neighbors and trying to find out if any one has home surveillance video that might help.
While the fires are being called suspicious, they haven’t been ruled arson by the Olean Fire Investigation Team. The investigation is continuing. the garage was deemed a total loss with an estimated $20,000 worth of damage,. the house fire caused an estimated $2,000 worth of damage .
It was another good year for New York deer hunters. For white-tailed deer hunters in New York state, it was the third year in a row that the numbers went up. They killed nearly 109,000 deer this fall, 11 thosuand more than last year and 23 thousand more than 2016.


Olean’s proposed Lincoln Park farmer’s market is going back out to bid next month.
The $1.15 millioni project was last put up for bid in July, but only one firm put in a bid and it was about $250,000 over the project’s budget. Ddocuments for the project will be available to contractors in a couple of weeks and bid openings are expected at the end of the month. the hope is to have construction begin in March.
Western new york is getting hunderds of thousands of dollars for snowmobile trail maintenance
Chautauqua County is getting the most, $200,000, Allegany County was awarded $111,000, Cattaraugus County was awarded $153,000, Erie County was awarded $186,000 and Niagara County was awarded $21,000.
It’s part of Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s $4.2 million package for snowmobile trail maintenance and grooming across New York State.
The state’s designated the weekend of Jan. 25-27 as a free snowmobiling weekend for all out-of-staters.

Christmas Fires Investigated

Fire investigators are looking into a couple of fires early Christmas morning a block apart on West Greene Street. Nobody was hurt in either fire. The first fire was reported just before 3 am in a garage and was reported a total loss with about $25,000 in damages.
Then shortly before 4:30 a second fire was reported just down the street inside a vacant house that’s being renovated.
The damage was estimated at $2,000. police say it looks like someone broke in.
Gowanda’s Historic Hollywood Theater marquee is getting a facelift.
But they had to take it down to do it. The sign’s been gone with the beginning of the month . right now it’s in Eden where it will be restored at a cost of about $200,000. The sign should be completely restored and ready to reinstall sometime in late March. The sign’s been hanging outside the Hollywood theater since it opened in 1926.

Scam Warning in Cattaraugus County

The Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office says someone is trying hard to scame you and they’re warning you to not fall for it.
Someone is making calls claiming to represent Little Valley Electric and the Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office Civil Division. They ask for your personal information and they say they want payments in the form of pre-paid gift cards.
Sheriff Whitcomb says personal information – such as Social Security numbers, bank account or credit card numbers – should not be given to suspicious callers.
Local addiction treatment centers in Cattaraugus and Allegany counties are making plans for to get get hundreds of thousadm of dollars to fight the opioid crisis. Earlier this month Gov. Andrew Cuomo said New York is getting more than $9 million in federal money and about $4 million of that money is being set aside for 26 counties, including Cattaraugus and Allegany.
Each county can get as much as $150,000.

Weekend Vigil Set for Tonawanda Woman

The community of Tonawanda is holding a vigil this weekend for 25-year-old Jessica Cameron, the woman that was set on fire.
Police say her 28 year old boyfriend hrew a flammable liquid on her, and lit her on fire Monday outside her place of employment, accidently burning himself in the process. According to police, the couple had an ongoing child custody dispute.
Cameron is in critical condition at ECMC’s burn unit. she’s expected to undergo several surgeries this week.
The vigil is on Saturday, at Clinton Park in the City of Tonawanda at 6:30 p.m.
A Go Fund Me account has been set up to help pay for her medical expenses. IT’s raised $14,000 so far.
area gas prices continue to drop.
gas in New York has fallen 3.1 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $2.73 per gallon according to GasBuddy.
In Olean, the price per gallon is holding at $2.61.

Stray Cat Policy Passes in Olean

The stray cat strut is going to have a differnt beat from now on in Olean.
The trap and release policy has been approved. Volunteers can go out and start trapping and sterilizing all the feral cats they find in Olean. The city’s Common Council unanimously voted to change the city code to allow trap-neuter-vaccinate-release programs.
The new resolution says any cat found wandering around will be treated as a stray and be neutered.
Voters in Salamanca say yes to the Vets Park sublease by an overwhelming vote of 303 to 27.
It subleases Veterans Memorial Park from the city for the next 50 years.
The referendum also included a proposal to buy two properties next to the Seneca Intermediate School for $75,000.
The space from the properties are for a new main entrance, parking lot and drop off area for the school.
This resolution also passed, 296-36.

Salamanca Voters to Decide on Referendum Today

Salamanca voters will decide if they want to upgrade the athlethic fields and other renovations at veterans memorial park .
today’s referendum would let the district sublease Veterans Memorial Park from the city for 50 years.
A yes vote gives the go ahead to propose a facilities project at the park. It also includes a decision on buying two properties next to the Seneca Intermediate School for $75,000. That would mean a new main entrance, parking lot and drop off area for the school.
The Allegany County Historical Center and Museum is looking for help with its expansion.
They want to build a climate controlled room in the museum’s basement to protect documents. IT’ll cost about $4,000.
Donations can be made at the Allegany County History Museum page on Facebook or the website.
They also want to add an exterior entrance for visitors to see antique equipment displays.

Cattaraugus and Allegany County Land Banks Get $1M Grants

Over 1.1 million dollars is being shared by Cattaraugus and Allegany County land banks.
They were told the good news last week by the state Attorney General’s Office about a couple of new grants.
The Cattaraugus County Land Bank will get $650,000 and Allegany County will get a $500,000 grant.
The Land Banks were formed to fight blight.
CAttaraugus County’s first 2018-19 influenza cases found in Olean
The flu has officially hit Cattaraugus County.
The first confirmed cases of influenza of the season have been recorded in Olean.
There are two cases of influenza confirmed by the state laboratory. Both are influenza type A.
The first cases in the state were reported in New York City in early December.
Last year there were 79,400 influenza-related deaths nationwide, including 183 babies.
Last year more than 48.8 million people had the flu.

Salamanca Man Will Be Charged With Murder

the 22-year-old Salamanca man accused of stabbinging a man in buffalo then running away to las vegas will be charged with second degree murder, according to the Olean Times Herald.
Brandon Francis is in jail in Henderson Nevada, near Las Vegas and will be extradited to Cattaraugus County to face the charge.
Police say Francis stabbed 22 year old Juwaan Holt to death over the weekend at a salmanca apartment.
city officials told the Salamanca Press on Monday that the stabbing is believed to have occurred during a botched robbery attempt.

United Steelworkers Local 4601 raised over $4,600 c, and then lets kids who are in need spend it on presents at local stores.
